Jonathan Green Black Beauty Dense Shade Grass Seed is a premium grass seed mixture specially formulated for lawns where limited sunlight makes growing healthy turf a challenge. This blend combines shade-tolerant tall fescues, fine fescues, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass to establish a thick, dark green lawn in medium to heavily shaded areas. It is an excellent choice for areas beneath mature trees and shrubs or alongside buildings and other structures that block sunlight.
The deeply rooted grass varieties in this blend are designed to compete with tree roots for moisture and nutrients while maintaining an attractive, uniform growth habit. Black Beauty® varieties also feature a waxy coating on the leaves that helps retain moisture, along with naturally insect- and disease-resistant varieties for added durability. The seed germinates in approximately 14–21 days under proper growing conditions.

Application Instructions:
- Timing: For cool-season lawns, apply in fall from mid-August through mid-October or in spring from mid-March through mid-May. Soil temperatures should be at least 55°F for germination, with 55–70°F being ideal for root development. Avoid seeding when soil temperatures are 75°F or higher.
- Prepare: Mow the existing lawn at the lowest setting and bag the clippings. Rake away leaves, debris, rocks, and accumulated thatch to expose the soil and improve seed-to-soil contact.
- Apply: Spread the seed evenly using a rotary, broadcast, or drop spreader. For overseeding, apply at the recommended rate for the area. For new lawns, use the higher application rate listed for new lawn establishment.
- Water: Water seeded areas twice daily for approximately 5–10 minutes to keep the seedbed consistently moist. Continue watering daily until the new grass reaches approximately 2–2½ inches tall.
- Mow: Begin mowing when the new grass reaches 3–4 inches tall. Avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade at a time to prevent unnecessary stress on the developing root system.
- Maintain Shade: Avoid excessive watering and fertilization in shady areas. Where possible, prune or thin tree branches to allow additional sunlight to reach the lawn.
