Whirlwind Windflower
Anemone × hybrida 'Whirlwind'Whirlwind Windflower (Anemone × hybrida ‘Whirlwind’) is a graceful fall-blooming perennial prized for its large, semi-double white flowers with distinctive, slightly twisted petals and golden-yellow centers. The blooms rise above the foliage on slender stems and sway gently in the breeze, creating movement and an airy appearance in the garden. Its late-season flowering makes it especially valuable for extending color into the fall when many summer perennials have finished blooming.
The dark green foliage forms a neat mound that provides an attractive base for the tall flower stems. The abundant white blooms create a bright contrast against darker foliage and are particularly effective in shaded or partially shaded garden areas. The flowers also attract butterflies and make excellent cut flowers, bringing the plant’s long-lasting blooms indoors.
Whirlwind performs best in moist, well-drained soil and appreciates consistent moisture, particularly during hot weather. It can tolerate full sun when adequate moisture is available but performs especially well in shade. Once established, it can gradually spread to form a substantial clump, making it useful for filling larger planting areas and creating a naturalized effect.
Care Instructions:
Planting: Plant in full shade to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil.
Soil: Adaptable to clay, loam, and sandy soils but performs best in fertile soil that retains consistent moisture.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment and during periods of heat or drought. Do not allow the soil to become excessively dry.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stems after blooming or cut the plant back in late fall once the foliage has died back.
Spacing: Space plants 2–3 feet apart to allow room for mature growth and natural spreading.
Maintenance: Apply a layer of mulch around the plant to conserve moisture. Divide in spring if the clump becomes too large or crowded.
With its elegant white flowers, late-season bloom time, graceful movement, and ability to brighten partially shaded areas, Whirlwind Windflower is an excellent choice for extending garden interest well into autumn.
Landscape Solutions:
- Brightens shaded areas where many late-season flowering plants produce fewer blooms.
- Provides fall color beneath trees and along woodland edges where consistent moisture is available.
