Popstar White Balloon Flower

Platycodon grandiflorus 'Pop Star White'

Pop Star White Balloon Flower is a compact perennial prized for its distinctive balloon-shaped flower buds and large, pure white, star-shaped blooms. The rounded buds swell like little balloons before opening, creating an unusual display that adds interest even before the flowers fully emerge. Once open, the crisp white blooms stand out beautifully against the plant’s deep green foliage and provide a bright summer display.

This dwarf selection grows about 6–8 inches tall and develops a compact, well-branched habit that makes it especially useful in smaller planting areas. Its low stature allows it to fill the front of a border without blocking taller plants behind it, while the relatively large flowers create an impressive display for such a small perennial. The compact growth also makes it well suited to containers, edging, and other spaces where a full-sized perennial would be too large.

Pop Star White blooms through the summer and attracts bees and butterflies to the garden. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and prefers average, well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates periods of drought and is generally resistant to deer and rabbits. The plant emerges relatively late in spring, so marking its location can help prevent accidental disturbance while it is still dormant.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in spring or fall, placing the crown at approximately the same depth as it was growing in its container. Handle the roots carefully when planting, as balloon flowers develop fleshy roots and are best left undisturbed once established.
Soil: Prefers average, fertile, well-drained soil. It adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soils as long as excess moisture drains away freely.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, provide average moisture and supplemental water during prolonged periods of heat or drought. Avoid consistently wet or poorly drained soil.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can encourage excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
Pruning: Deadhead spent flowers throughout summer to encourage continued blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. Allow the foliage to die back naturally in fall, then cut the plant to the ground after it has gone dormant.
Spacing: Space plants 10–12 inches apart.
Maintenance: Low maintenance once established. Balloon flowers emerge late in spring, so mark their location to avoid disturbing the dormant crown. Avoid moving established plants whenever possible.

The bright white flowers make Pop Star™ White particularly useful for adding contrast to colorful perennial plantings or brightening areas where a clean, neutral flower color is needed. It works well along garden edges, at the front of borders, in containers, and in small gardens. The unusual balloon-shaped buds provide an additional ornamental feature, while the flowers can also be cut for summer arrangements.
