Most Christmas Cacti are native to Central and South America. Although these plants are called cacti, they are truly different in all aspects from the common desert cactus with which we are all familiar. These plants are found in the same environments as orchids. They are most often found in the forks of tree limbs where they grow in decayed leaves and other natural debris that accumulates there.

Amaryllis

Amaryllis is a winter flowering houseplant that requires very little care. It is native to South Africa and can flourish in a variety of climates. We love them as a winter indoor plant, since they blossom beautiful flowers from their bulbs. Amaryllis are a very interesting plant to watch grow, since they seem to grow quite a bit every day. We suggest picking up a few bulbs and planting them in a pot filled with small rocks. The loose rocks allow water to distribute to the bulb evenly and add some color to this winter planter.

Amaryllis at Patuxent Nursery

Amaryllis is one of the easiest, if not the easiest, flowers to make bloom. This tropical looks at home indoors or even outdoors when the weather is warmer. Patuxent Nursery is stocked with Amaryllis and we have several options for both pre-potted Amaryllis, or Amaryllis bulbs. Both are a great choice and make the perfect Christmastime house plant. With colors ranging from various shades of red, white, pink, salmon and orange and textures that include stripes and multiple colors, you’re bound to find the perfect fit for your home.

Potting Your Own Amaryllis

This plant is very easy to pot and start on your own.

Before planting, you’ll need to prep your Amaryllis. This can be done by soaking the bulb in lukewarm water for a couple of hours. If you’re not planning on planting the bulb right away, store it in a cool place in 40-50 degree F.

Next you’ll want to get a potting compost. Patuxent Nursery has many pre-mixed options that are perfect for Amaryllis and can save you time. Place the bulb in the potting compost and make sure that the roots are covered. Be sure not to damage the root system during planting.

Once the plant is potted, place the planter in a warm area where it will see direct sunlight. 68-70 degrees F is the target temperature, but it will flourish in warmer and colder temperatures also. Water the bulb sparingly until a stem surfaces. Once you can see a stem, you can water the bulb more to promote flower growth.

Once the bulb starts flowering, you can expect the flowers to stay around for about 7-10 weeks. After flowering, the bulb can be made to flower again by cutting the old flowers at the stem post-flowering. Continue to water and fertilize to promote leaf growth and additional blooms.
