October Magic Ivory Camellia
Camellia sasanqua ‘October Magic Ivory’ PP24,887October Magic® Ivory Camellia is an evergreen sasanqua camellia grown for its creamy white, fully double flowers and dense, upright form. Thick, leathery leaves are glossy dark green on top and stay on the plant through winter. It grows vigorously even as a young plant and matures at about 6–8 feet tall and 5–7 feet wide, a size that suits the side of a house or a property line.
In fall, ruffled, carnation-like blooms about 2¾ inches across open over seven to eight weeks. Each flower is packed with layers of petals and petal-like segments, carries a light fragrance, and stays white as it ages. Flowering after most shrubs have finished, it brings fresh blooms late in the year, and cut stems suit small arrangements. It serves as an evergreen hedge or screen, a tall foundation planting, or a focal point in a border.
October Magic Ivory grows best in full sun to partial sun, with shade from hot afternoon sun. It needs acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and does poorly in alkaline soil or where water stands. Once established, it tolerates short dry spells. It is rated for Zones 7–9 and, like other camellias near their northern limit, can show leaf scorch after dry, windy winter days, so a sheltered spot helps. A few simple practices keep it healthy:
Care Instructions:
Planting: Plant in spring so roots can establish before winter, in a spot sheltered from strong winter wind and hot afternoon sun, setting the top of the root ball slightly above the surrounding soil.
Soil: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil amended with organic matter; avoid alkaline soil, which can turn leaves yellow between green veins, and low areas where water collects.
Watering: Water deeply and regularly through the first growing season, and soak the soil in fall before the ground freezes to reduce winter leaf scorch.
Fertilizing: Feed in late winter with a fertilizer made for acid-loving plants, such as an azalea or camellia blend, following a soil test where possible.
Pruning: Prune, if needed, in early spring before the first flush of new growth, and avoid heavy cutting later in the season so the fall flower buds are not removed.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 4–6 feet apart; since that is closer than the 5–7 foot mature spread, neighboring shrubs will meet and form a continuous hedge or screen.
Maintenance: Keep 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, pulled back from the stems, and check the undersides of leaves for scale insects, the most troublesome pest of camellias.
Gardeners choose October Magic Ivory when they want white flowers in fall from an evergreen shrub that also screens a view all year. Its upright, dense shape fills the space between houses or along a fence without spreading far, and the dark leaves make a quiet backdrop for perennials. It performs best in a sheltered, partly shaded bed near the house, where the late flowers can be seen from windows, doorways and walkways.
Landscape Solutions:
- Dense, upright growth to 6–8 feet forms an evergreen hedge or privacy screen along a property line or patio.
- Fall flowers bring white color to the garden after most shrubs have finished blooming.
- Glossy evergreen leaves give foundation beds structure in winter, when deciduous shrubs are bare.
- Its moderate 5–7 foot width fits narrower spaces beside houses and fences.
- The double white flowers can be cut for small fall arrangements.
