Black Jack Gold Brown-Eyed Susan is a vigorous, upright selection of the native Brown-Eyed Susan that produces masses of golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with exceptionally dark brown to nearly black central cones. Strongly branched stems carry the blooms above a green, leafy base, creating a full display of color from midsummer into early fall. The flowers are smaller than those of many traditional Black-Eyed Susans but are produced in impressive numbers, giving the plant a bright, airy effect when in full bloom. Its long flowering season and abundant buds make it a reliable source of late-season color.

Growing approximately 2½ to 3½ feet tall with a spread of about 1 to 2 feet, Black Jack Gold has a naturally upright habit that makes it especially useful toward the middle or back of perennial borders. Its strong stems allow the flowers to rise above neighboring plants, while its relatively narrow footprint makes it easy to incorporate into mixed plantings. Mass several together for a broad sweep of gold, or combine it with native grasses and other late-blooming perennials for a naturalistic look. Black Jack Gold performs best in full sun and average, moist but well-drained soil, although it tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including clay and relatively lean soils. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods. Established plants are drought tolerant, and excessive fertilization is unnecessary. Deadheading encourages additional flowering and helps limit self-seeding, while leaving some seed heads in place provides food for birds. Cut plants back after a hard freeze or in early spring before new growth begins.
