Tulip Poplar

Tulip Poplar is a large, fast-growing deciduous shade tree prized for its towering stature, unique tulip-shaped flowers, and distinctive leaf shape. Native to the eastern United States, including Maryland, this impressive tree is known for its strong upright growth, straight trunk, and broad pyramidal canopy that matures into a stately landscape specimen.

In late spring to early summer, Tulip Poplar produces unusual cup-shaped flowers in soft greenish-yellow tones with orange markings at the base of each petal. The blooms resemble tulips, giving the tree its common name, though they are often held high in the canopy and may be easier to appreciate on mature trees. These nectar-rich flowers are highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees.

The foliage is equally distinctive, with large bright green leaves featuring a uniquely squared-off tip and smooth, lobed edges. In fall, the leaves turn golden yellow, adding strong seasonal interest before dropping. Its fast growth rate and broad shade canopy make it a popular choice for large landscapes, parks, and naturalized areas where there is room for it to reach its full size.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in full sun with plenty of space for mature growth and root development.
Soil: Use deep, fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Tulip Poplars prefer moist soil and benefit from deep watering during dry periods.
Fertilizing: Usually not needed in rich soil. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring if growth is slow.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain structure.
Spacing: Space at least 35–50 ft apart from buildings or other large trees.
Maintenance: It is low maintenance once established and best suited for large landscapes.

Tulip Poplar typically grows 70 to 90 feet tall, and even taller in ideal conditions, with a spread of 35 to 50 feet. It thrives in full sun and prefers deep, fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It performs especially well in rich loamy soils and is tolerant of wet conditions once established.

Its native value, impressive size, and unique flowers make Tulip Poplar an outstanding specimen tree for large properties, shade plantings, and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Size: Unless the product is labeled “B&B,” it comes in a container rather than ball-and-burlap. Sizes listed with ‘Cal.’ indicate the caliper of the trunk.
