Royal Standard Hosta

Hosta ‘Royal Standard’

Royal Standard Hosta is a vigorous perennial that builds a broad, dense mound of glossy, medium to deep green leaves. The oval to heart-shaped leaves grow up to about 8 inches long, with deeply set parallel veins and wavy edges. Mature clumps reach about 2–2½ feet tall and spread 4–5 feet wide. Raised in the early 1960s from a cross involving Hosta plantaginea, it was the first hosta to receive a U.S. plant patent.

From mid-August into September, sturdy stems rise to about 3 feet and carry clusters of funnel-shaped white flowers with a clean fragrance. It blooms far more heavily than its H. plantaginea parent, and the late flowers are visited by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds after many perennials have finished. The fragrance suits it to beds beside patios, decks, and walkways, while the large clumps fill woodland borders and cover the ground beneath trees.

Royal Standard grows well in partial to full shade and accepts more sun than most hostas, handling morning sun where the soil stays consistently moist. In strong sun the leaves lighten toward chartreuse, and extreme heat can scorch them. It prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils across a wide pH range. Slugs and deer both feed on hosta leaves, so simple care keeps the clumps looking good.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in spring or early fall in partial shade or a spot with morning sun, setting the crown at the same depth it grew in the pot.
Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or leaf mold, and adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils.
Watering: Water deeply during dry spells to keep the soil evenly moist, especially where plants receive several hours of sun.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring as the shoots emerge, and top-dress with compost to keep the soil rich in organic matter.
Pruning: Cut faded flower stems to the base after bloom, and remove the collapsed foliage after frost or in early spring before new shoots appear.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 3–4 feet apart; the wide mounds will meet and form a continuous cover of foliage.
Maintenance: Control slugs as new leaves unfold in spring, protect plants where deer browse, and divide crowded clumps in spring or early fall, although plants can stay undisturbed for years.

Gardeners choose Royal Standard Hosta for its pairing of bold green foliage with fragrant late-summer flowers, something few shade perennials offer. Its tolerance for morning sun widens the range of beds where a hosta can succeed, and its vigor makes it a dependable choice for filling large shaded areas. It performs best in a moist, sheltered border or woodland edge near a path or seating area where the fragrance can be enjoyed.

Landscape Solutions:

  • Fragrant late-summer flowers make it a good choice beside patios, decks, and entry walks where the scent is easy to notice.
  • It handles morning sun better than most hostas, bringing large hosta foliage into beds that are not fully shaded.
  • Wide, dense mounds with foliage to the ground cover bare soil beneath trees and large shrubs.
  • Its August and September flowers give bees and butterflies a late source of nectar after most shade perennials have finished blooming.
  • Planted in groups, it forms a uniform band of glossy green foliage along woodland edges and shaded borders.
