Royal Burgundy Barberry

Developed as an improved selection of Crimson Pygmy Barberry, this cultivar features rich velvety burgundy leaves that hold their deep hue throughout the growing season, providing dramatic color contrast in a variety of garden settings. In fall, the foliage deepens to a striking reddish-black, extending seasonal interest well past peak summer color.
Although its spring flowers are small and pale yellow and not a primary landscape feature, they do add subtle seasonal texture before leaf emergence. Care Instructions:
Planting: Choose a site with full to partial sun exposure. Full sun enhances foliage color.

Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first season to establish roots. Once established, barberries are moderately drought-tolerant.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before new growth begins.
Mulching: Spread 2–3″ of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few inches away from stems.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape or remove damaged wood.
Spacing: Space plants about 2–3 ft apart to allow airflow and room for mature growth.
Maintenance: Occasional thinning of crowded stems helps maintain plant health and appearance.
