Russian Sage

Perovskia atriplicifolia, Salvia yangii

Russian Sage is a long-blooming perennial prized for its airy spikes of lavender-purple flowers, aromatic silvery-gray foliage, and exceptional heat and drought tolerance. Beginning in midsummer and continuing well into fall, its tall stems are covered in clouds of small blooms that create a soft, hazy effect in the landscape. The finely textured foliage adds contrast throughout the growing season and releases a pleasant fragrance when brushed against.

Its upright, open habit makes Russian Sage an excellent choice for sunny borders, pollinator gardens, cottage gardens, and mass plantings. The long-lasting flowers are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators, while the aromatic foliage helps deter deer and rabbits.

Typically growing 3 to 5 feet tall and 2 to 4 feet wide, Russian Sage provides vertical interest without feeling heavy. Its drought tolerance and low-maintenance nature make it a dependable performer in challenging landscapes, especially once established.

This perennial thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, performing especially well in sandy or rocky conditions. It dislikes poorly drained soils and requires very little supplemental water after establishment, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardens.
