Mexican Evening Sundrops
Oenothera berlandieriMexican Evening Sundrops is a cheerful, low-growing perennial prized for its bright yellow blooms, long flowering season, and excellent drought tolerance. From late spring through summer, and often into fall, it produces an abundance of cup-shaped golden yellow flowers that open wide in the sun and create a bright carpet of color across the garden. The blooms rise just above the narrow green foliage and bring a soft, natural look to sunny landscapes.
This spreading perennial forms a loose mound or groundcover, typically reaching 12 to 18 inches tall with a spread of 18 to 24 inches or more. Its relaxed habit makes it especially useful for filling open spaces, softening garden edges, and adding movement to borders. The bright flowers attract pollinators and provide dependable color through hot, dry weather when many other perennials begin to fade.
Mexican Evening Sundrops is especially valued for its heat tolerance, drought resistance, and adaptability to poor or rocky soils. Once established, it requires very little maintenance and performs beautifully in sunny borders, cottage gardens, slopes, and naturalized plantings. Its ability to spread and bloom heavily makes it a strong choice for mass planting and erosion control.
Care Instructions:
Planting: Plant in full sun for the strongest flowering and best compact growth.
Soil: Use well-drained soil. This plant performs well in sandy, rocky, and lean soils.
Watering: Water during establishment, and drought-tolerant once established.
Fertilizing: Minimal fertilizer needed. Overly rich soil can reduce flowering.
Pruning: Trim lightly after heavy bloom to encourage fresh growth and rebloom.
Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart for spreading coverage.
Maintenance: Avoid overwatering and overly rich soil.
This U.S. native perennial thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained soil. It tolerates sandy, rocky, and dry conditions extremely well and should not be overwatered. Occasional trimming after heavy bloom can help refresh the plant and encourage continued flowering later in the season.
Its sunny yellow blooms, easy-care nature, and long bloom period make Mexican Evening Sundrops an excellent choice for bright, low-maintenance summer color.
