Southern Gentleman Winterberry Holly

Ilex verticillata ‘Southern Gentleman’

Southern Gentleman Winterberry Holly is a male cultivar of the native winterberry holly, grown primarily for its important role as a pollinator for late-blooming female winterberry varieties. Unlike female winterberries, Southern Gentleman does not produce berries, but it produces abundant small white flowers that provide pollen during the later winterberry bloom period. Its late flowering makes it particularly valuable for improving berry production on compatible female selections such as Sparkleberry, Winter Red, and Winter Gold.

This deciduous shrub develops an upright, rounded, multi-stemmed form and typically reaches approximately 6 to 8 feet tall and wide. Its dark green foliage provides a lush backdrop through summer before turning yellow-green to purple-bronze in fall and dropping to reveal the shrub’s branching structure. The inconspicuous white flowers appear in late spring to early summer, attracting bees and other pollinating insects. Although it does not have ornamental berries itself, its pollen is essential for producing the brilliant red, orange, or yellow berries displayed by nearby female winterberries.

Southern Gentleman grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers acidic, consistently moist soil. It is especially well-suited to wet or periodically wet areas where many other landscape shrubs may struggle, making it useful for rain gardens, pond edges, streamside plantings, and naturally moist portions of the landscape. It adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils when adequate moisture and appropriate soil acidity are maintained. Good sun exposure encourages flowering, while regular moisture supports healthy growth and establishment.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Choose a location with adequate room for the shrub to reach its mature size.
Soil: Prefers acidic, moist soil and adapts to clay, loam, and sandy soils. Avoid alkaline soil, which can cause nutrient deficiencies.
Watering: Provide consistent moisture during establishment and during prolonged dry periods. Winterberry performs particularly well in naturally moist locations.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if needed based on soil conditions and plant growth.
Pruning: Prune in early spring before new growth begins to remove damaged or crossing branches and maintain the desired shape.
Spacing: Allow approximately 6–8 feet between plants, with the male positioned within approximately 50 feet of compatible female winterberries for effective pollination.
Maintenance: Maintain consistent soil moisture, keep a layer of organic mulch over the root zone, and remove damaged or unwanted branches as needed. Plant with compatible female winterberries to support berry production.
Pollinator: Southern Gentleman is a male winterberry and does not produce berries. Plant it with late-blooming female varieties such as Sparkleberry, Winter Red, Winter Gold, Cacapon, or Shaver for pollination and berry production.

Because Southern Gentleman is a male winterberry, its primary landscape purpose is to provide pollen for compatible female plants. Planting one male near several female winterberries can help create a productive berry-producing grouping, with the male positioned within approximately 50 feet of the females. Matching bloom timing is important, so Southern Gentleman is best paired with late-blooming females such as Sparkleberry, Winter Red, Winter Gold, Cacapon, and Shaver. This makes it a valuable addition to wildlife plantings where the eventual berries provide an important winter food source for birds.

Landscape Solutions:
