Hoya Hindu Rope

Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’

Hoya Hindu Rope is a distinctive houseplant known for its thick, twisted foliage and trailing, rope-like stems. Also called Compacta Hoya or Krinkle Kurl, this unusual cultivar of the wax plant features tightly curled, fleshy leaves that overlap along the vines, creating a sculptural appearance unlike that of most traditional houseplants. The leaves are typically deep green with a glossy surface, and their unusual shape provides plenty of visual interest even when the plant is not flowering. Its slow-growing habit makes it well-suited to hanging baskets, elevated shelves, and decorative containers, where the trailing stems can gradually cascade over the edges.

Although its foliage is the main attraction, Hoya Hindu Rope can also produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers when grown under suitable conditions. The waxy blooms are generally pink and white with reddish centers and form rounded clusters along the stems. Flowering is most likely when the plant receives plenty of bright, indirect light and consistent care. Mature plants may take time to bloom, but the flowers can last for an extended period when they appear. Importantly, the small flowering spurs should be left intact after blooming because the plant can produce future flower clusters from the same points.

Hoya Hindu Rope thrives indoors in bright, indirect light and warm temperatures. A location near an east-facing window or a few feet from a bright south- or west-facing window can provide suitable conditions. Its thick leaves store moisture, so it is more tolerant of short dry periods than of consistently wet soil. A loose, airy potting mix that drains quickly is essential to prevent root rot. The plant prefers to dry substantially between waterings and generally needs less frequent watering during the cooler months when growth slows.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Grow in a container with drainage holes using a loose, airy potting mix suitable for hoyas and other epiphytic plants.
Soil: Use a fast-draining blend of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite to provide airflow around the roots.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting mix has dried substantially, allowing excess water to drain completely. Reduce watering during winter.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength about once a month during spring and summer; reduce or stop feeding during winter.
Pruning: Trim trailing stems as needed to manage growth, but do not remove the short, persistent flower spurs where blooms develop.
Spacing: Allow approximately 12–24 inches of trailing room, depending on the container and desired display.
Maintenance: Rotate the container periodically for even growth, inspect the tightly curled leaves for mealybugs, remove dead foliage, and repot only when necessary.
Pollinator: No companion plant is required.

Hoya Hindu Rope is an excellent choice for indoor plant displays where an unusual texture and trailing habit are desired. It works particularly well in hanging planters, on plant stands, or on shelves where its rope-like stems can be viewed from above and allowed to cascade naturally. Because it grows slowly and generally prefers not to be repotted frequently, it can remain in the same container for several years when its growing conditions are suitable. With bright light, careful watering, and protection from cold drafts, this long-lived houseplant can become an eye-catching addition to a collection of tropical foliage plants.

Please note: This plant comes in its grower’s nursery pot, ready for you to place in your favorite decorative pot at home. The pot in the picture is not included.
