Silver Scrolls Coral Bells

Heuchera ‘Silver Scrolls’

Silver Scrolls Coral Bells is a foliage-focused perennial prized for its large, rounded leaves with a striking metallic silver overlay and deep purple to nearly black veining. Young foliage emerges with burgundy and purple tones before developing its characteristic silvery finish, creating a dramatic contrast between the leaves and their dark veins. The undersides of the leaves carry rich maroon coloring that becomes especially noticeable when the foliage moves in the breeze.

In late spring and early summer, slender reddish stems rise well above the foliage mound and carry airy sprays of small pinkish-white to white bell-shaped flowers. The flowers provide a delicate vertical accent above the bold foliage and can attract hummingbirds and butterflies. While the blooms add seasonal interest, the foliage remains the main feature and continues providing color and texture well after flowering has finished.

Silver Scrolls forms a compact, mounding habit that reaches approximately 10 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. Its manageable size makes it especially useful along pathways, toward the front of perennial borders, beneath shrubs, and in containers. Plant it in groups when a larger sweep of silver foliage is needed, or use individual plants to create contrast among green, gold, or darker-leaved companions.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in partial shade with morning sun and afternoon protection, particularly in hot climates. Keep the crown slightly above the soil surface to prevent excess moisture from collecting around the crown.
Soil: Use organically rich, well-drained soil that retains moderate moisture. Loam or sandy soil works well, provided it does not become excessively dry.
Watering: Provide average moisture, especially while establishing and during extended periods of summer heat. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings while avoiding prolonged drought.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can produce weak growth.
Pruning: Remove spent flower stems after flowering if desired. In early spring, remove winter-damaged, tired, or damaged foliage before new growth emerges.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 12 to 18 inches apart to allow the foliage to develop fully and maintain good air circulation.
Maintenance: Keep mulch away from the crown, remove damaged foliage in spring, and check mature plants periodically for frost heaving. Divide crowded clumps when necessary to maintain vigor.

This Coral Bells performs best in partial shade with rich, well-drained soil and average moisture. It can tolerate more sunlight when adequate moisture is available, but protection from intense afternoon sun is beneficial in hot climates. Silver Scrolls is also tolerant of heat, drought, deer, and rabbits, giving it flexibility in challenging garden conditions. Remove tired foliage in spring and keep the crown slightly above the soil line to encourage healthy growth and overwintering.
