Glow Stick Holly
Ilex crenata ‘Glow Stick’Glow Stick Japanese Holly is a distinctive evergreen shrub that brings bright golden-yellow foliage and a naturally narrow, upright form to the landscape. Growing approximately 4 to 6 feet tall while remaining only about 1 foot wide, it provides vertical structure without taking up much horizontal space. The foliage emerges a vivid golden yellow, softens toward green during the hottest part of summer, and brightens again as temperatures cool. Unlike many narrow evergreen shrubs that require frequent shearing to maintain their shape, Glow Stick naturally holds its columnar form with little pruning.
Small white flowers appear in late spring, although this variety is primarily grown for its colorful evergreen foliage rather than its blooms. Glow Stick is a female selection, so it can produce small black berries when a compatible male Japanese holly is planted nearby. The berries are not the main ornamental feature, but they can add seasonal interest and provide food for birds. Its evergreen foliage remains useful throughout the year, giving the landscape structure during fall and winter when many other plants have lost their leaves.
Glow Stick performs best in full sun to partial sun, with brighter foliage color developing in sunnier locations. It prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil but can adapt to a range of soil conditions when drainage is adequate. The foliage has good resistance to sunburn and winter damage, and the plant tolerates salt and urban conditions, making it useful for exposed landscapes and areas near roads or other challenging sites. Regular watering is particularly important during establishment and extended periods of hot, dry weather.

Pollinator: Glow Stick is a female Japanese holly and can produce black berries when pollinated by a male cultivar such as ‘Hoogendorn’ or ‘Stokes’. For berry production, plant a male Japanese holly within approximately 50 feet.
The exceptionally narrow habit makes Glow Stick especially useful where traditional shrubs would spread too far. It can be planted in narrow beds, along pathways, around entryways, or in other spaces where a vertical evergreen accent is needed without overwhelming surrounding plants.
