Key Lime

Key Lime, also known as Mexican Lime, is a compact citrus tree prized for its fragrant white blossoms, glossy green foliage, and small, intensely flavorful fruit. The thin-skinned limes are highly aromatic with a tart, distinctive flavor that makes them a favorite for pies, cocktails, marinades, and fresh cooking. Its compact size and ornamental appeal make it an excellent choice for containers, patios, and sunny indoor spaces.

Throughout the year, Key Lime offers multiple seasons of interest. Fragrant white flowers often appear several times annually, filling the air with a sweet citrus fragrance before developing into clusters of small green fruit that ripen to yellow if left on the tree. The glossy evergreen foliage provides year-round beauty, and mature plants frequently display flowers and fruit at the same time.

Typically growing 6 to 10 feet tall and 4 to 8 feet wide in containers, Key Lime is easy to grow with adequate sunlight and warmth. It is more cold-sensitive than many other citrus varieties, making it ideal for container culture where it can be protected from freezing temperatures.

This citrus tree thrives in full sun and well-drained potting soil. Water when the top inch of soil becomes dry and fertilize regularly during the growing season with a citrus-specific fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant fruit.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in a container with excellent drainage using a well-drained citrus potting mix.
Soil: Prefers potting soil.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, allowing excess water to drain completely.
Fertilizing: Feed regularly during spring and summer with a fertilizer formulated for citrus trees.
Pruning: Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches as needed.
Spacing: Allow 4–8 feet of space for mature growth.
Maintenance: Move indoors before temperatures fall below 40°F. Provide the brightest possible location during winter. Hand pollination is generally not necessary.
