Brandywine Viburnum

Viburnum nudum ‘Bulk’, Brandywine™, Brandywine Witherod Viburnum, Smooth Witherod Viburnum, Possumhaw Viburnum

Brandywine Viburnum is a compact native shrub valued for its exceptional combination of flowers, colorful berries, and fall foliage. In late spring, clusters of fragrant white flowers appear above glossy green leaves, attracting honey bees and butterflies. The flowers provide an early-season display before giving way to one of the shrub’s most distinctive features: clusters of berries that change color as they mature.

Beginning in late summer, the berries progress from green to ivory, vivid pink, and blue, with multiple colors often appearing within the same cluster at once. This unusual combination creates a jewel-like display that becomes especially striking as the foliage turns vivid red to deep maroon in fall. The berries also provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife, extending the plant’s usefulness well beyond its flowering period.

Brandywine has a more compact and refined habit than the straight species, growing approximately 5 to 6 feet tall and wide. Its upright, rounded form works well as a specimen, hedge, or mixed-shrub planting without becoming as large as many other viburnums. The glossy foliage provides a substantial green backdrop throughout spring and summer before changing color in fall, giving the shrub several distinct seasons of interest.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in full sun to partial sun with good air circulation. Choose a location with enough room for the mature 5 to 6 foot height and spread.
Soil: Use acidic to neutral, well-drained soil that remains consistently moist. Brandywine can tolerate clay and periodically wet conditions better than many shrubs.
Watering: Provide average to high moisture, especially during establishment and extended periods of dry weather. Do not allow newly planted shrubs to dry out.
Fertilizing: Apply a balanced granular fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive fertilizer, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowering and fruiting.
Pruning: Prune sparingly immediately after flowering if needed to maintain shape. Remove dead or very old wood, but avoid heavy pruning because the shrub blooms on old wood and excessive pruning can reduce flowers and berries.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 5 to 6 feet apart to allow the mature canopy to develop while maintaining good airflow.
Maintenance: Apply a layer of mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Remove dead or damaged branches as needed and avoid removing developing flower clusters if berry production is desired.
Pollinator: Brandywine can produce berries without a separate pollinator, but planting another Viburnum nudum that blooms at the same time, such as ‘Winterthur’, can encourage heavier fruit production.

This viburnum performs best in full sun to partial sun and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soil. It is particularly useful in areas where other shrubs may struggle with wet conditions, including rain gardens, pond edges, and low areas of the landscape. Brandywine can produce berries on its own, although planting it near another compatible Viburnum nudum, such as ‘Winterthur’, can help support heavier fruit production. Because it blooms on old wood, avoid heavy pruning that would remove next season’s flower buds.

Landscape Solutions:

  • Provides a native shrub for consistently moist areas where many common landscape shrubs may struggle.
  • Offers an excellent option for rain gardens, pond edges, streams, and other locations that periodically become wet.
  • Creates wildlife value in smaller landscapes with spring flowers for pollinators and colorful berries for birds.
  • Creates a useful seasonal hedge or informal screen without requiring the larger footprint of many native screening shrubs.
  • Provides an attractive specimen plant where its changing berry colors and fall foliage can be viewed throughout the season.
