Aster 'Woods Pink'
Symphyotrichum dumosum ‘Wood’s Pink’Wood’s Pink is a standout selection in the Aster family, bred for compact form, excellent disease resistance, and prolific late-season bloom. This dwarf aster reaches just 12–18 inches in height and width, making it a perfect fit for the front of garden beds, borders, or containers. From late August through October, the plant is covered in daisy-like, pastel pink flowers with bright yellow centers, creating a soft yet impactful display when much of the garden is winding down.
This cultivar belongs to the Symphyotrichum dumosum species, commonly known as bushy or rice button asters, which are known for their neat, mound-like growth. Aster Wood’s Pink maintains a dense, tidy shape with minimal care and is mildew-resistant, an improvement over older aster varieties. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, sedum, goldenrod, and other fall bloomers for a rich, layered look.
In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Wood’s Pink is a pollinator magnet. Bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects flock to the blooms, making it a valuable addition to ecological gardens and late-season nectar sources. This hardy perennial is perfect for anyone looking to extend their garden’s color and wildlife value into fall.
Planting: Plant in spring or early fall in full sun for best flowering. Part shade is tolerated but may reduce bloom density. Space 12–18″ apart to allow airflow and prevent mildew.
Watering: Water regularly to establish, especially during dry periods. Mature plants prefer evenly moist soil but tolerate short dry spells.
Pruning: No heavy pruning needed. You can shear lightly after blooming to maintain shape. Deadheading is optional but helps tidy up the plant.
Pest & Disease Control: Very resistant to powdery mildew.
Soil Tips: Performs best in well-drained, fertile soil. Mulch to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
