American Sycamore

Platanus occidentalis

American Sycamore is a majestic native shade tree prized for its massive size, distinctive exfoliating bark, and broad, spreading canopy. One of the largest hardwood trees native to eastern North America, it develops striking mottled tan and grey bark that peels away in cooler weather to reveal its smooth, bright white branches and trunk, providing year-round visual interest. Its large maple-like leaves create dense shade during the growing season before turning golden brown in fall.

Its impressive stature makes it an excellent choice for parks, large properties, streambanks, and naturalized landscapes where it has plenty of room to mature. The broad canopy provides valuable shade, while its hollow limbs and seed balls offer food and shelter for birds and other wildlife. As it ages, the unique bark becomes one of its most recognizable and ornamental features.

Typically growing 75 to 100 feet tall with a spread of 60 to 80 feet, American Sycamore is a fast-growing tree capable of becoming a landscape landmark for generations. It performs especially well in moist locations but adapts to a wide range of growing conditions.

This native tree thrives in full sun and prefers deep, moist, well-drained soil, though it tolerates periodic flooding, clay soils, urban conditions, and seasonal drought once established. Its adaptability and longevity make it an excellent choice for large-scale landscapes.

Care Instructions:

Planting: Plant in full sun in a location with ample room for its mature size.
Soil: Prefers deep, fertile, moist soil but adapts to a variety of soil types.
Watering: Water regularly during establishment. Mature trees tolerate both wet conditions and short periods of drought.
Fertilizing: Fertilization is rarely needed in healthy soils. Apply compost in spring if desired.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
Spacing: Space trees 60–80 feet apart to accommodate mature growth.
Maintenance: Mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture and protect the trunk from mower damage.

Its towering form, beautiful peeling bark, and exceptional wildlife value make American Sycamore one of the finest native shade trees for expansive landscapes.
