How to Winterize Your Outdoor Fountain

You have added an outdoor fountain to your yard and you love the peace and tranquility it brings to your outdoor living space. You’ve invested in your landscape and now it’s time to protect that investment so you can enjoy your outdoor fountain for many years to come. It is important to prepare your outdoor fountain for winter, especially if you live where the winter temperatures can drop below freezing.

If at all possible, place your fountain under cover, preferably in your garage or even your shed.  Some fountains, such as tiered fountains, can be easily taken apart and doing this will make for easier storage and will eliminate the need for winterization. With larger or heavy fountains, this might not be the case and you will have to winterize them where they stand.  Don’t worry, winterizing your outdoor fountain isn’t hard and below are some easy tips to help you through the process.

These simple steps will protect your outdoor fountains and pumps to better ensure that they last many years:

  • Outdoor fountains are created to handle the elements but do not make the mistake of leaving water in them as it could freeze and cause the fountain to crack and possibly ruin the fountain and the pump. Drain all the water from your fountain BEFORE the temperatures start to plummet. This is the most crucial step of the process.
  • It’s best to remove the pump and store it either in the garage or your shed if possible. Be sure to clean it well and remove all dirt, debris and algae.
  • Cover your fountain with a fountain cover or a tarp or other protective cover. This preventative measure will help keep moisture out of your fountain that could potentially freeze over the winter.
  • If you don’t cover your fountain, at the very least put some type of absorbent material, such as blankets or towels, in the basin and tiers of the fountain to prevent water getting in and possibly freezing which could crack your fountain. It is best to do this in conjunction with covering your fountain for extra protection.

This simple tips for how to winterize your outdoor fountain will protect your fountain and ensure that you can enjoy it for many, many years to come.
