Variegated Brunnera
Variegated Siberian Bugloss, Brunnera macrophylla ‘Variegata’Variegated Brunnera is a classic shade perennial admired for its softly variegated foliage and delicate spring blooms. In early to mid spring, airy sprays of small, bright blue flowers rise above the foliage, resembling forget-me-nots and adding a gentle burst of color to shaded garden spaces. The blooms create a light, cloud-like effect that contrasts beautifully with the bold leaves below.
This clump-forming perennial typically reaches 12 to 18 inches in height with a spread of 18 to 24 inches. Its large, heart-shaped leaves are deep green with irregular creamy white margins, giving the plant a luminous quality that brightens darker areas of the garden. The foliage remains attractive well beyond the bloom period, providing season-long interest and texture.
Variegated Brunnera thrives in partial to full shade and prefers rich, well-drained soil with consistent moisture. It performs best in cooler conditions and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun, which can scorch the variegated leaves. Once established, it is relatively low maintenance and benefits from occasional cleanup of older foliage to keep the plant looking fresh and healthy.
