Nandina 'Obsession'
Nandina domestica ‘Obsession’, Heavenly Bamboo, Sacred Bamboo, SeikaNandina ‘Obsession’ is a compact, colorful evergreen shrub known for its vibrant red new growth and finely textured foliage. A sport of the popular ‘Gulf Stream’ variety, this cultivar adds an extra punch of color, with brilliant red emerging leaves that mature to a rich green in summer and transition to shades of crimson and burgundy in fall and winter. The layered, feathery foliage provides a graceful, bamboo-like appearance, despite not being a true bamboo.
One of the main appeals of ‘Obsession’ is its year-round interest. Unlike some nandinas that become leggy, this variety maintains a dense, upright form, making it ideal for low hedges, foundation plantings, or as a bold accent in mixed borders. Its tidy shape requires little to no pruning, and it naturally grows in a neat, mounded habit.
This nandina also produces small white flowers in late spring to early summer, which are occasionally followed by red berries in fall, though fruiting is less common in compact varieties. Its evergreen foliage ensures it remains attractive in all seasons, providing contrast and structure even in winter landscapes.
Adaptable and low-maintenance, ‘Obsession’ thrives in a variety of soil types and is both drought- and heat-tolerant once established. It’s also resistant to deer and requires little intervention to look its best, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of garden settings.
Planting: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Plant 2–3 feet apart for mass plantings or spacing in borders. Amend heavy clay with compost to improve drainage.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, ‘Obsession’ is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during hot, dry spells.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Trim lightly in late winter or early spring to shape if desired, but the plant maintains a naturally compact form. Remove any damaged or crossing stems as needed.
Pest & Disease Control: ‘Obsession’ is generally pest- and disease-resistant. Occasionally, spider mites or leaf spot may occur, especially in overly wet or humid conditions, but these are rarely serious.
Soil Tips: Performs well in a wide range of soils, from sandy to clay, as long as drainage is adequate. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
