Magnolia 'DD Blanchard'
‘D.D. Blanchard’ is one of the most stately and vigorous cultivars of the Southern Magnolia, prized for its commanding presence and richly textured evergreen foliage. This cultivar features large, leathery leaves with a deep green topside and a striking, velvety coppery-brown underside, creating dynamic color and contrast throughout the year. Its dense, upright-pyramidal form grows to a mature height of 50–70 feet with a spread of 25–40 feet, making it a striking specimen or screen tree.
In late spring through summer, ‘D.D. Blanchard’ produces giant, creamy white, saucer-shaped blooms up to 10–12 inches wide. These highly fragrant flowers are a magnet for bees and pollinators and offer a classic Southern aesthetic. Though its main bloom time is late spring and early summer, it may also produce occasional blooms into fall.
With its strong central leader, symmetrical shape, and wind-resistant structure, ‘D.D. Blanchard’ is often used in formal landscapes, large residential yards, campuses, and civic spaces. It thrives in full sun, tolerates a wide range of soils, and is both drought and heat tolerant once established. This cultivar blends elegance and hardiness—perfect for making a lasting impact in the landscape.
Planting: Select a location with full sun to partial shade and ample space for growth.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during the first 1–2 years. Mature trees are more drought-tolerant, but benefit from deep watering during dry spells, especially in hot summers.
Pruning: Little pruning is necessary.
Pest & Disease Management: Generally low-maintenance.
Soil Tips: Best in slightly acidic, loamy soil with good drainage. Will tolerate clay or sandy soils if amended with compost. Annual mulching helps conserve moisture and enrich the soil.
