Hibiscus Holy Grail
Hibiscus moscheutos ‘Holy Grail’, Hardy Hibiscus ‘Holy Grail’, Rose Mallow ‘Holy Grail’, Summerific® Hardy Hibiscus ‘Holy Grail’Developed by Walters Gardens for the Summerific® collection, Hibiscus Holy Grail is prized for its richly-colored foliage and large, long-lasting blooms. The leaves emerge glossy and very dark, nearly black, with burgundy undertones, forming a dramatic backdrop for oversized, round 8–9″ flowers in deep crimson-red from midsummer into fall. Between blooms, the bright green calyxes provide added visual contrast against the dark foliage.
Hibiscus Holy Grail grows upright and strong, reaching about 4 to 4.5 feet tall and 4.5 to 5 feet wide, with sturdy stems supporting the abundant flower display. Although it dies back to the crown each winter, its rapid spring regrowth quickly re-establishes a robust mound. Hardy in USDA Zones 4–9, ‘Holy Grail’ flourishes in moist, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun to part shade. It attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, resists deer browsing, and makes a striking center in contemporary landscapes or pollinator borders.
Planting:
Best planted in a site with full sun or light afternoon shade. Amend soil with compost for optimal moisture retention.
Watering:
Water regularly through the growing season to keep soil moist. Use mulch to stabilize moisture levels and encourage robust growth.
Pruning:
Cut back to ground level in early spring before new shoots appear. Deadhead spent blooms to maintain tidy appearance, though not required for rebloom.
Pest & Disease Control:
Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
Soil Tips:
Prefers moist, amended soil but tolerates average garden conditions. Apply winter mulch to protect crowns in colder climates.
