Green Mountain Sugar Maple

This majestic tree develops a broad, rounded crown filled with deep green, leathery foliage throughout the growing season. Come autumn, its leaves put on a spectacular show, turning vivid shades of orange, red, and gold, one of the most stunning displays among shade trees.
Growing up to 50–70 feet tall and 40–50 feet wide, Green Mountain Sugar Maple provides excellent shade and structure, making it ideal for large residential properties, campuses, or street planting (where space allows). It’s slower to leaf out in spring, reducing the risk of frost damage to new growth, and more tolerant of urban conditions than the species, especially in areas with dry or windy weather. While it still prefers rich, moist soils, this cultivar can better withstand occasional drought once established.
In addition to its visual appeal, the Green Mountain Sugar Maple supports pollinators in spring and offers habitat and food for wildlife throughout the year. As a long-lived, low-maintenance tree, it’s a reliable investment for any landscape looking to combine beauty, ecological benefit, and legacy.
Planting: Choose a location with full sun or light shade and plenty of room to accommodate its mature size. Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and just as deep. Backfill with native soil, water thoroughly, and apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
Watering: Water regularly during the first 2–3 years after planting to establish a strong root system. Once established, it can tolerate dry conditions but will benefit from deep watering during prolonged droughts.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. Remove dead, crossing, or poorly structured limbs in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
Pest Control: Relatively pest- and disease-resistant. Occasionally affected by aphids, leafhoppers, or leaf scorch during extreme heat or drought. Maintain proper spacing and airflow to prevent fungal issues.
Soil Tips: Though adaptable, Green Mountain Sugar Maple thrives in well-drained, fertile soils. If soil is heavy clay, amend with compost and plant slightly higher than ground level to encourage drainage.
