Glow Pop Holly
Ilex crenata ‘Glow Pop’Glow Pop Japanese Holly is a stunning new evergreen shrub bred for its luminous golden foliage and compact, mounding habit. Unlike traditional green Ilex crenata varieties, Glow Pop shines with bright chartreuse to golden-yellow leaves that hold their color even in full sun without burning or fading. Its fine-textured foliage and rounded shape make it an excellent alternative to boxwood, especially in sunny locations where bright contrast is needed.
This low-growing evergreen provides structure and interest year-round and remains tidy without shearing. Glow Pop® naturally maintains a dense form, requiring little pruning, and is ideal for use in formal borders, foundation beds, or modern mixed plantings. It’s also highly effective as a low hedge or in containers, where its brilliant foliage acts as a focal point or foil for darker or cooler-toned plants.
With excellent resistance to pests and disease, Glow Pop is a low-maintenance solution for adding color and texture to landscapes. Its adaptability to different soil types and tolerance of pruning make it suitable for both novice and seasoned gardeners. Plus, unlike many golden plants, its foliage won’t bleach in the sun, making it a reliable performer in bright, exposed sites.
care instructions:
Planting: Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. For mass plantings or hedges, space plants 2 to 3 feet apart. Plant at the same depth as the nursery container and water thoroughly after planting.
Watering: Keep soil evenly moist during establishment. Once established, Glow Pop® is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from regular watering during extended dry spells, especially in full sun locations.
Pruning: Little to no pruning is required to maintain its shape. If desired, prune lightly in late winter to early spring to shape or rejuvenate. Avoid heavy shearing, as the plant naturally maintains a compact, tidy form.
Pest Control: Glow Pop® is typically pest and disease-resistant. Monitor occasionally for issues like spider mites or leaf miners, which are rare and treatable with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Soil Tips: Tolerates a wide range of soils, including clay and sandy types, as long as drainage is adequate. It prefers slightly acidic soil but is adaptable. Add compost to improve organic content and maintain consistent moisture.
