Dragon Lady Holly
Ilex × aquipernyi 'Meschick'Dragon Lady Holly is a refined, columnar evergreen holly known for its dense, upright growth and dramatic presence in the landscape. This hybrid holly features lustrous, dark green, spiny leaves that provide year-round color and structure. In fall and winter, female plants produce vivid red berries when a male pollinator (such as ‘Blue Prince’ holly) is nearby, offering seasonal contrast against the foliage and adding ornamental interest and wildlife value.
Reaching a mature height of 10–20 feet with a narrow 4–8 foot spread, Dragon Lady is perfect for spaces where vertical emphasis is desired. Its naturally tidy, symmetrical form requires minimal pruning, making it a favorite for foundation plantings, formal gardens, entryway accents, and screening hedges. Highly adaptable and cold-hardy, it grows well in a variety of soils and conditions, including urban environments.
This holly is prized not only for its beauty but also for its resilience. It is resistant to pests and disease and tolerant of shade and air pollution. With a little pollination planning, Dragon Lady Holly delivers elegance and ecological benefits across all seasons.
Planting: Choose a site with well-draining soil and protection from harsh winter winds. Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball. For berries, plant a male holly nearby.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant but performs best with consistent moisture.
Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape. Due to its naturally symmetrical form, minimal pruning is needed.
Pest Control: Generally pest- and disease-resistant. Monitor for occasional scale or leaf miners; treat only if damage is significant.
Soil Tips: Enrich the soil with organic matter. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and maintain root zone health.
