Coreopsis 'Mercury Rising'
Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ is a standout perennial in the Big Bang™ series, prized for its rich, velvety-red flowers and long blooming season. Its bold color and airy growth habit make it a striking choice for borders, cottage gardens, and pollinator-friendly plantings.
Blooming from early summer well into fall, ‘Mercury Rising’ produces daisy-like flowers with deep burgundy petals surrounding small golden centers. The contrast is dramatic, and the blooms are especially eye-catching against the plant’s finely cut, medium green foliage.
This variety is not only beautiful but also resilient. It’s tolerant of heat, humidity, and drought once established, and it’s rarely troubled by deer or pests. It spreads gently and fills out well, offering a relaxed, natural look in sunny gardens.
Reaching 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ is an excellent low-maintenance option for mass plantings, mixed beds, or containers. With consistent deadheading, it rewards gardeners with months of vibrant, pollinator-attracting color.
Planting: Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. While adaptable to various soil types, ‘Mercury Rising’ performs best in moderately fertile conditions. Space plants about 18–24 inches apart to allow for healthy airflow and growth.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season. Once established, the plant is moderately drought-tolerant. Avoid overwatering, as Coreopsis dislikes soggy roots.
Pruning: Deadhead blooms regularly to encourage continued flowering. In late fall or early spring, cut back dead stems to the base to prepare for fresh new growth.
Pest & Disease Control: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant. Occasionally, aphids or leaf spots may appear in humid conditions, treated with insecticidal soap or improve airflow to reduce risk.
Soil Tips: Tolerant of a wide range of soil types but prefers well-draining soil. Avoid rich, heavy soils that retain too much moisture, as this can lead to root rot or overly lanky growth.
