Cherry Laurel 'Otto Luyken'
Prunus laurocerasus ‘Otto Luyken',‘Otto Luyken’ Cherry Laurel (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Otto Luyken’) is a dwarf evergreen shrub that delivers year-round structure and refined texture to the landscape. Growing only 3 to 4 feet tall with a spread of 5 to 6 feet, it forms a tidy, dense mound of dark green foliage. In mid to late spring, it produces fragrant, upright white flower spikes that contrast beautifully against the lustrous leaves. These blooms may be followed by small black berries in late summer, which can attract birds.
One of the most attractive features of Otto Luyken is its adaptability. It tolerates both sun and shade, a variety of soils, and urban conditions, making it suitable for everything from formal landscapes to naturalized plantings. With its deer resistance, evergreen presence, and low-maintenance nature, this shrub provides year-round interest and reliable structure.
Whether used as a low hedge, mass planting, foundation shrub, or specimen in a woodland garden, Otto Luyken brings elegance and resilience to the landscape. Thanks to its spreading growth habit, it’s also an excellent choice for erosion control on slopes and banks.
Planting: Choose a location with well-draining soil. While ‘Otto Luyken’ thrives in part to full shade, it will also tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Backfill with amended soil if necessary and water thoroughly after planting.
Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. After establishment, reduce frequency—only water during prolonged dry spells.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. If desired, prune immediately after flowering in late spring to shape or control size. Avoid heavy pruning in fall or winter to preserve flower buds.
Pest Control: Relatively pest-free, but occasionally aphids or scale may appear. Treat with insecticidal soap if needed. Monitor for root rot in poorly drained soils.
Soil Tips: It prefers fertile, loamy soil but will tolerate a wide range as long as it drains well. To enhance drainage, improve heavy clay with compost or sand.
