BerryBux Blueberry
Vaccinium corymbosum hybrid ‘BerryBux’BerryBux Blueberry is a unique and ornamental edible shrub that combines the charming, formal appearance of boxwood-like foliage with the delicious bounty of fresh blueberries. This shrub is perfect for gardeners who want both beauty and flavor in a compact package. This patented hybrid (ZF08-095, PP 25,467) was bred to look more like an attractive landscape shrub than a typical wild berry bush, making it especially suitable for hedges, borders, formal gardens, or container plantings where traditional blueberry plants might not fit as well.
In spring, BerryBux® displays clusters of delicate white and pink-tinged bell-shaped flowers that attract bees and other beneficial pollinators to your edible landscape. These blooms set the stage for a mid-summer harvest of small, intense, deep-blue berries that boast a fragrant, wild-blueberry-like flavor and rich antioxidant content. Although the fruit tends to be smaller than many larger blueberry cultivars, its sweet, aromatic taste makes it ideal for fresh eating, jams, sauces, and baking, especially when grown in full sun and acidic soil.
BerryBux® is compact and round at maturity, typically reaching about 2–3 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide. Its dense, glossy dark green foliage holds visual appeal throughout the growing season and often turns vibrant reds, purples, and yellows in fall, providing year-round interest in the garden. This manageable size makes BerryBux® perfect for small gardens, patio containers, formal edible hedges, or foundation plantings where space is at a premium.
Care Instructions:
Planting: Choose a site with full sun exposure (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for best foliage color, flowering, and fruit production.
Soil: Plant in acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5–5.5). Amend heavy or alkaline soils with organic matter like peat or pine bark to improve structure and acidity.
Watering: Water deeply and regularly during establishment and dry periods. Keep soil evenly moist without becoming soggy.
Fertilizing: Apply an acid-forming, slow-release fertilizer formulated for blueberries or other acid-loving plants in early spring before new growth begins.
Mulching: Spread a 2–3″ layer of organic mulch (pine bark, pine needles) around the base to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from stems.
Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring while the plant is dormant to maintain a tidy shape and encourage vigorous new growth.
Spacing: Space plants 3–4 ft apart to allow airflow and room for mature growth.
Maintenance: Mulch annually, monitor soil and water levels, and remove any dead wood as needed.
Pollinator Required: No. This plant is self-fertile and will set fruit independently. Planting another blueberry variety nearby (such as Bluecrop or Duke) can improve yields.
Adapted to USDA Hardiness Zones 5–8, BerryBux® is hardy and easy to grow with minimal pruning and maintenance. It performs best with regular moisture and well-drained, acidic soil, and benefits from full sun exposure to maximize berry production and foliage health. Its combination of ornamental form and edible function makes it a standout choice for gardeners looking to incorporate fruiting plants into designed landscapes without sacrificing aesthetics.
