Beni-Kaze Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra ‘Beni-Kaze’, meaning “Red Wind” in Japanese, is a distinctive cultivar of Japanese Forest Grass prized for its stunning fall color transformation. It features arching mounds of soft green, bamboo-like foliage throughout spring and summer that gently sways with the breeze. As autumn approaches, the leaves shift dramatically into glowing tones of red, burgundy, and purple, creating a vibrant, painterly display in shady corners of the garden.
This clump-forming grass reaches 18–24 inches tall and spreads slowly by rhizomes to form dense, tidy mounds. It’s ideal for adding movement and texture in woodland gardens, shaded borders, and even containers. Unlike some cultivars selected for golden or chartreuse foliage, ‘Beni-Kaze’ focuses on delivering a bold fall performance, making it a standout in mixed plantings with hostas, heucheras, ferns, and other shade lovers.
Easy to care for and naturally deer-resistant, this ornamental grass thrives in moist, well-drained soil with partial to full shade. It offers seasonal interest and a soft, flowing form that brings contrast and calm to structured garden beds.

Pruning:
Cut back to 1–2 inches above the soil before new growth appears in late winter.
