Fall Perennials

Fall means cool weather, sweaters, and a whole new range of color possibilities for your garden. While your landscape prepares itself for the winter, this does not mean you have to sacrifice color! Fall perennials can give your garden some extra life and texture before the winter months. A cozy fall garden is easy to maintain with the help of perennials!

Here are some of our favorites:

Sedum

Sedum

While Sedum may look complex with its dark pink flower clusters and green succulent leaves, this plant is known for being low maintenance, and therefore a great option for the beginner gardener. If part of your yard tends to get too much sunlight, this plant might be the perfect one to fill in that space (seriously, this plant thrives on neglect). That said, deer will munch on Sedum’s thick leaves, so keep this in mind when planning your fall garden.

Toad Lily

It’s totally obvious why the Toad Lily made our list of favorites, right? With its purple and white dappled petals, this orchid-like flower makes a bold statement. The Toad Lily, which begins its bloom in mid-September or October, prefers a nice shaded area.

Solidago

Solidago

Solidago, or Goldenrod, is a great option if your fall garden is in need of some height. Some Goldenrods, like the Fireworks Goldenrod, are known to grow up to 3 feet tall. You can count on this plant’s vertical growth pattern and sunshine-yellow coloring to brighten up your fall garden space!

Aster

As a member of the daisy family, Aster (meaning “star”) are best known for their purple petals and vibrant yellow centers. When planted in mass, these perennials can create a sea of color or, when cut, make for great flower arrangements!

Rudbeckia

Black-Eyed Susan

Also referred to as Rudbeckia (Maryland’s official state flower), Black-Eyed Susan’s contrasting black and yellow coloring are a vibrant choice with plenty of aesthetic value. Reaching 2-3 feet, this taller flower is best planted in mass.
