If you’re worried about mosquitoes ruining your backyard parties this summer, now is the time to think about preventing them from moving in in the first place. This year especially, mosquitoes are predicted to be out in full force and with the threat of Zika Virus and other mosquito-borne diseases, there is certainly a reason to be concerned.
The first line of defense is clearly by covering exposed skin, and using a DEET spray. However, for those of you interested in treating your yard and preventing the little buggers from breeding further – we have a few solutions that will help keep the mosquitoes at bay throughout the summer.
Bonide Mosquito beater
This all natural, residual formula repels mosquitoes, gnats, flies and other insects for up to 2 weeks. It comes in a ready to spray (RTS) and granular solutions. The 1 quart RTS is good for 5,000 square feet and the granules treat 4,000 square feet. This product contains cedar oil, citronella, geranium oil and lemongrass oil.
Mosquito bits are great for marshy areas, bird baths, or any other location that mosquitoes, gnats and other pests may breed.
For a longer term solution, Mosquito Dunks are what you need. These tablets are non-toxic to other wildlife, and treat with BTI – a bacteria toxic only to mosquito larvae. This treatment lasts 30 days, and will treat up to 100 square feet of surface water. These dunks are labeled for organic gardening by the US EPA and are a highly effective, low impact solution to keeping mosquitoes from breeding around your property.
