An Easy, Low Maintenance Clean Air Houseplant: Sansevieria

Also known as Mother-In-Law’s Tongue or Snake Plant, Sansevieria is a popular choice for an easy, low maintenance clean air houseplant for some very good reasons. Sansevieria is an excellent plant for a beginner gardener because you don’t have to have a green thumb to keep this plant in good health. It tolerates neglect well and it doesn’t need a lot of light or water to thrive. The tall thick leaves store moisture, which means they don’t require a lot of water. Low light conditions and infrequent watering make this plant perfectly happy.

It’s chosen often as a houseplant as it is an attractive upright plant that makes a bold architectural statement in any décor. With many cultivars to choose from, the Sansevieria is popular in commercial settings because it thrives where other plants fail.

Also known as a clean air plant, perhaps the best reason to own the Sansevieria is its ability to filter formaldehyde from the air. Formaldehyde is commonly found in building and insulating materials and common household products like facial tissue and synthetic fabrics. The bathroom is one of the most difficult situations for most houseplants but Sansevieria will tolerate the low light conditions, love the humidity and it will clean the air.

Sanseveria is the best. These plants tolerate neglect and poor light. But, give them half a chance and they are performers. I put mine out on the patio for summer and they love it–a little morning sun and warm temps. In winter they go dormant and decorate my living room window.
